A Look Inside Our History
The Village of Sarasota was first incorporated in 1902, making this community relatively young in comparison to the rest of the state and country. A professional planner, John Nolen, was hired in 1925 to develop a master plan for the city’s growth. In 1928 an effort began to unite Tampa to the north, to Miami by way of one highway. Dubbed “Tamiami Trail,” it ran right through Sarasota, including U.S. 41 curving along Sarasota Bay. At that time City Hall was located on the Bayfront. Forty years later in the 1960s, automobile traffic had grown in such numbers that it was difficult to get through Sarasota on “the Trail.”
The old city hall was demolished and the seat of city government was moved inland to its current location, clustered around the intersections of Ringling Boulevard and Main Street with U.S. 301 (Washington Boulevard). As the city prospered and expanded, the old planned city became known as Downtown.
